Nigerian Federal Government Terminates Training of Nigerian Army by US

FG issued a statement urging the US army to cancel the training of Nigerian Army battalion. At the request of the government, the US said it has discontinued its training of Nigerian Army battalion.

The first phase of the training started April 2014, while the second phase started August 2014. With the training, untrained civilian personnel have been provided with basic soldiering skills.

According to Tribune, the FG statement reads:

“We regret premature termination of this training, as it was to be the first in a larger planned project that would have trained additional units with the goal of helping the Nigerian Army build capacity to counter Boko Haram.

The U.S. government will continue other aspects of the extensive bilateral security relationship, as well as all other assistance programmes.”
