The Festac area of Lagos state was thrown into a state of confusion yesterday when a 23-year-old admission seeker, was found hanging from his apartment ceiling.
A 23-year-old admission seeker, identified simply as Ugochukwu, was on Sunday, August 16, found hanging in his apartment.
According to Punch Metro, Ugochukwu, who lived at 311 Road, Festac
Town, had sought admission into a University in Lagos state, and had
written the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) but
was yet to secure the admission.
It was learnt that at about 12pm, Ugochukwu’s mother, identified as
Ngozi, and his two siblings came back from church to find him dead with
his body hanging in the sitting room.
The family who reportedly stay in a rented room and parlour, raised the alarm which brought neighbours to the scene.
Ugochukwu reportedly used a rope to hang himself from a ceiling
fan. The matter was said reported at the Festac police division, and the
officers reportedly came to remove his body.
A police source said: “Nobody can say why he committed suicide.
But two Sundays ago, they caught him mixing cement to drink. The family
members had actually gone to church, and he had stayed behind. It was a
nieghbour who caught him and alerted the family members.
"But all efforts made to find out from him, what went wrong
reportedly proved abortive, as he refused to tell anyone anything,
including his mother.”
One of Ugochukwu’s neighbours, identified as Oluja, said it was
when he returned from church that he learned the young man had committed
suicide.
He added that the last discussion he had with the deceased showed
that Ugochukwu was desperate about his university admission and
financial problem.
He said: “He had tried several schools, but never made it.
Also, he was having a financial problem. Maybe, it is the sum of these
worries that made him commit suicide.”
