Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has denied
allegations by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano state that he planned to
dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives
Congress (APC).
Though Aliyu admitted that at the time he led the G-7 group, he said the objective was to resolve leadership problems in the PDP.
Aliyu’s reaction according to Daily Times is contained in a press release signed by his chief press secretary, Israel A. Ebije, which was in response to a statement credited to Governor Kwankwaso, claiming that Aliyu was privy to the G-7 decision to decamp to the APC.
Aliyu added that the objective of their action was proactive and the result was positive.
The governor said he would always respect members of the G-7 for their position against impunity in the party at that trying period. He, however, maintained that the decision to leave for the APC was not on the agenda of the group but more of an individual decision of members.
Aliyu said he had no regrets in leading a group that brought sanity to the PDP, at a time the party was passing through difficulties. He said their effort was indeed nationalistic and a reflection of the maturity of Nigerian democracy.
The five governors, called G-5, who decamped consist of the Rivers state governor, Rotimi Ameachi; the Kwara state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed; the Sokoto state governor, Aliyu Wammako; the Kano state governor, Rabiu Kwankwanso; and the impeached governor of Adamawa state, Murtala Nyako.
Governor Lamido of Jigawa was the seventh member of G-7 thought to be decamping but he did not. He later admitted that he betrayed the G-7 group with his actions.
