Will FG Ban Okada Riders Nationwide? Here's What Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi is Saying

While speaking on Tuesday at the celebration of the national day of Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association, the Minister of Transportation, opened up on the report of FG's plan on ban of Okada.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that motorcycles and tricycles should not be banned nationwide because doing so would affect the nation’s economy negatively.

 

Amaechi said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the celebration of the national day of Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN).

 

The minister advised state governments not to ban commercial cyclists but train them to reduce their recklessness on the road and ensure strict compliance with rules and regulations.

“I don’t think we should ban Okada because if we do, it will affect the economy; they only need to be trained to obey rules and regulations. The issue of security, safety and regulation should be dealt with at the state level; state governments should train Okada riders,’’ Amaechi said.

 

He urged the operators avoid recklessness and obey traffic rules and regulations in order to reduce the rate of accidents.

 

According to him, commercial cyclists play vital roles in the transportation sector, especially in transporting agricultural produce where roads are not easily accessible.

“We know you play a vital role in the economy: Not all buses, taxis can access our roads for agricultural purposes; a lot of Nigerians depend on you because your services are cheap.

“The economy cannot only grow through white collar jobs; everybody doesn’t need to depend on government and what you have done is to be self-employed to feed yourselves,’’ the minister said.

 

Shehu Babangida, National President of ACOMORAN, said that the day was an annual event designed to celebrate the informal sector in Nigeria.

 

He said the association’s 12 million membership had massively reduced the rate of unemployment and criminality in the country by engaging vulnerable youths.

 

The ACOMORAN president thanked the minister and former Zamfara governor, Senator Sani Yerima, as well as other dignitaries, for gracing the occasion.

Members of the House of Representatives were left in a pensive mood following clash that occurred in the House over Buhari's health status.

Tempers boiled in the House of Representatives after members engaged in a heated exchange of words on Tuesday over the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari.

 

The lawmakers, it was gathered quarreled over the use of the word “sickness” in referring to Buhari or explaining his reason for being away from the country to the United Kingdom since January 19.

Punch reported that it was the House Majority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, who started the argument when he tried to stop the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, from describing the President as a sick man.

 

The two members from the All Progressives Congress could not control themselves over the matter. According to Punch, Ado-Doguwa was contributing and opposing a motion seeking to investigate the alleged harassment of members of ‘Kwankwasia’ followers, a political group loyal to former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

 

He had stated that the motion, which was moved by a fellow Kano lawmaker, Mr. Aliyu Madaki, was “basesless” because the Kwankwasia group was known for moving around the state and inciting people against the political leadership.

 

Ado-Doguwa observed that the country was already under tension owing to the absence of Buhari and could not afford any “partisan” activities that could lead to insecurity.

 

He added that the group was already campaigning for the 2019 presidential elections in a volatile place like Kano.

 

“Our beloved President is sick abroad.

“These partisan activities are completely unnecessary and baseless. The police must do their work of protecting lives and property anywhere in the country.”

 

At the end of it all, the "House resolved to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to invite the IG of Police & Kano State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Yusuf to ascertain the reasons for the undue harassment and intimidation of Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Kano State loyal to the Kwankwanssiyya Movement, in order to avert a breakdown of law and order in Kano State, and report back to the House within three (3) weeks for further legislative action. Other infringements across the country, such as in FCT and Rivers, should also be investigated."

Pregnant Beyonce pulls out of headlining Coachella Festival

Beyonce has pulled out of performing at California’s Coachella music festival in April under doctor’s orders.

The pregnant singer was due to top the bill at the annual festival in the California desert on 15 and 22 April.

Organisers have said Beyonce will headline the event in 2018 instead.

“Following advice of doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule, Beyonce has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival,” a statement said.

“However, Goldenvoice and Parkwood are pleased to confirm that she will be a headliner at the 2018 festival. Thank you for your understanding.”

The festival, which is based in Indio, hasn’t revealed who will replace her.

Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar are still headlining the two-weekend festival.

The British band will perform on 14 and 21 April while the US rapper will top the bill on 16 and 23 April.

Beyonce performed at the Grammys earlier this month, where she showed off her baby bump and took home two awards.

She won best music video for Formation and best urban contemporary album for Lemonade.

Adele dedicated her album of the year prize to the US singer.

She told the audience: “I can’t possibly accept this award.

“I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful, but Beyonce is the artist of my life.”

The 35-year-old and her husband Jay Z already have a daughter, five-year-old Blue Ivy.

They haven’t said when their twins are due.

Beyonce headlined Glastonbury Festival in 2011, three years after Jay Z topped the bill at the event in 2008.
